Keselowski Goes Old-School at Michigan

Brad Keselowski began his weekend at Michigan International Speedway traveling at a much slower pace on Friday than he will be in the Pure Michigan 400 on Sunday.
Before climbing behind the wheel of his No. 2 Team Penske Sprint Cup Series Ford to start practice, the 2012 champion took a spin around the two-mile oval in a replica of a 1901 Sweepstakes.
For this year’s June race on the Irish Hills oval, Keselowski qualified at 197 mph-plus. He was considerably slower during Friday morning’s leisurely jaunt in the classic racecar.
“I got it up there pretty good, to about 50 or 60 (mph),” he said. “Those cars are all about horsepower. Now, you look at our cars and it’s about horsepower, handling and everything that matters to win on the Cup side. Back then, it was about just running. The race that Sweepstakes won, there were 40 entries and only two finished. The others all blew up or broke down and had all kinds of issues.”
The opportunity to drive the Sweepstakes provided Keselowski with perspective on where the sport once was and where it’s headed in 2016.
“Motor sports has changed a lot,” he said. “That car was fun to drive. There are a lot of little things we probably take for granted now as far as amenities are concerned. The sport is building and getting better all the time. The cars we have now are phenomenal pieces, under-appreciated by me.”
As Keselowski rolls further into the weekend, he and his fellow Cup Series competitors will be working with the lower-downforce …
