After reaching the semi-final in Bastad, Gastao Elias has climbed to a career-best ranking position, and he carried his good form to Umag as well. Today he defeated Spanish veteran Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1 6-2 in what appears to be a routine win. In fact, Elias served at only 48% and he faced 11 break points, saving 10 of those! If he wasn’t that good, the result could have been different, but he was outstanding in the most important points, breaking Spaniard 5 times from 7 opportunities he had. Portuguese has won almost 60% of the return points but he somehow was in bigger danger in his service games, with a nice solution in almost every of those situations. The match started with back-to-back breaks but after that Elias raised his level to win all of the remaining games, taking Garcia-Lopez’s serve all 3 times. In the 4th game of the second set, Gastao saved 3 break points, avoiding to fall 3-1 behind, and that is where his 5-games-strike started, breaking Spaniard in games 5 and 7 to bring the match home in just over 80 minutes of play.Teymuraz Gabashvili needed the similar time on the court against Nino Serdarusic, 19-year-old Croat who received a wild card to play in his first ATP tournament. Gabashvili ousted the teenager by 6-4 6-2, playing against only 1 break point and on the other hand making 3 breaks of serve, from 9 chances he created. Serdarusic managed to stay toe-to-toe with his rival in the opening 8 games, but he consigns his serve in game 9 after some 7 deuces and 5 break points for the Russian.
