Ion Tiriac: ‘Federer dances waltzes on the court, has shots that aren’t in the books’

Ion Tiriac had an interesting conversation with L’Equipe, where the former Romanian player shared many anecdotes of his time as a professional.
Tiriac started off by saying that Rod Laver was one of the best players he’d ever faced. ‘He could do absolutely everything,’ said Tiriac. ‘Besides him, there’s Lew Hoad. Harry Hopman, the only coach who ever taught me anything in tennis, told me one day that Hoad had too much talent for one person. I’ve seen him, seen him with my own eyes, do press-ups with two fingers. But he used to drink a lot. And his back didn’t hold up. He retired very young from tennis.’ In his book, Tiriac had mentioned that Guillermo Vilas was one of the best players. Asked to elaborate, Tiriac said, ‘He worked six to eight hours a day. He won Slams without any talent. You have to respect that. Compare him to Ilie Nastase, who never worked a day in his life. But he loved the game more than anything.
