HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Let the debate begin. Is Jimmie Johnson the “Greatest of all Time” now that he’s tied Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt with seven career Sprint Cup Series championships? The inevitable finally happened Sunday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway when Johnson scored one of his most dramatic victories in his career that just so happened to put him in the same rare air as Petty and Earnhardt. Ironically, Johnson started the race last after his car failed to make it through pre-race inspection due to body modifications NASCAR did not like. That start to the day no doubt tickled many in the sport’s fan base who bristle at the team’s transgressions over the years. But it didn’t take Johnson long to rocket through the field and become a factor in winning the race and the title. For the third year, the Championship 4 finale format created intrigue, entertainment and no doubt controversy after Carl Edwards and Joey Logano made contact late to trigger a huge crash and end the Joe Gibbs Racing driver’s quest for the title. But while “purists” continue to howl about the elimination-style Chase being “unfair,” as if any playoff across the sports landscape is, Sunday was the third straight season Homestead provided off the chart excitement. And this year it had the extra benefit of history being made in the form of Johnson’s seventh title. Not a bad way to end the longest season in professional sports by any means.
