Championship hopefuls Joey Logano, Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards spent most of the Ford EcoBoost 400 near the front of the field but all came up short in their quest to win the 2016 Sprint Cup Series Championship. Logano started 13th and led six laps on route to a fourth-place finish. The Team Penske driver was a consistent top-five car and challenged for the lead late before making contact with Carl Edwards on a late restart, sending Edwards hard into the inside front stretch wall and out of contention. “It was eventful to say the least. I hate being that close to a championship and not getting it,” Logano said. “The team did a great job all day. We had a good race car and we put ourselves in position to win.” Logano would need to pit following contact with Edwards and a lengthy red flag clean up period to repair his right front fender. On the ensuing restart, Logano made up four spots before another yellow flag was displayed following a spin by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. On the final restart, Logano started third but was unable to catch eventual race winner and champion Jimmie Johnson, settling for fourth. “I just timed it a little bit wrong to get underneath him. I just didn’t have enough time to get under him. We lost some time there and unfortunately we finish second,” Logano said.
