JGR Puts Three in Top Five

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Championship favorite Joe Gibbs Racing placed three of its four cars in the top-five in Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway, increasing the chances of a second straight Sprint Cup Championship for the team. Denny Hamlin overcame an early pit road speeding penalty to finish third. Matt Kenseth led 176 laps on the day before finishing fourth and Kyle Busch came up short in his bid for sweeping the two races at Martinsville this season with a fifth-place effort. Along with the penalty, Hamlin’s bid for a sixth Martinsville victory continued to be eventful as he and Jimmie Johnson banged fenders near the mid-way point of the race. “Solid day but obviously not what we were looking for,” Hamlin said. “I knew when they called it that I sped. It wasn’t like I was rolling too fast, it was exiting my pit box. I got jammed up by whoever was in front of me, there were cars on the outside and I was trying to gas to get clear of them and then back off. With these shorter sections I didn’t have time to get it back.” Hamlin said frustration from incidents with Johnson at New Hampshire and Charlotte may have led to him moving Johnson out of the …
