Jimmie Johnson has won nine times at Martinsville Speedway now after his victory Sunday in the Goody’s Fast Relief 500. But that’s only part of the story. Johnson now has the chance to win the elusive seventh Sprint Cup Series title he’s been pursuing since getting “stuck” on number six a few years ago. The Hendrick Motorsports driver can relax the next two races of the Round of 8 because for the first time since the introduction of the elimination-style Chase format, he’ll go to Homestead-Miami Speedway with a shot at hoisting the Sprint Cup championship trophy. “I’ll probably lie to all of you guys and say I’m not going to think about it at all,” Johnson said Sunday in Victory Lane. “But it’s inevitable. Fortunately, I don’t have to think about it for three weeks. But we’re going to enjoy this and savor it. We’re going to get our ducks in a row for Homestead.” The conversation about Johnson’s quest for history will now take center stage for the next three weeks and for some it will be difficult to hear.
