Koch surprised to earn first save before first win

PHOENIX — Matt Koch likely visualized one of his first Major League milestones as a first career win. The D-backs right-hander achieved a career first in Tuesday’s 11-4 win over the Rockies, but it wasn’t that one.
Koch, who has been a starter all season in the Minors prior to his September callup, pitched four scoreless innings of relief to earn his first save in just his second career appearance.
“It’s not what I expected, but it’s kind of a good way to get the career started,” Koch said. “It’s been awesome, I’m honored to be here. It’s awesome to be around a great group of guys, they’ve been awesome to me and very welcoming, so it’s been a lot of fun so far.”
Earlier this homestand, Koch made his Major League debut against the Giants. He pitched a scoreless 11th inning, despite issuing a pair of walks, in an extra-innings loss.
