Kang sent to Indianapolis for continued rehab

CHICAGO — Third baseman Jung Ho Kang flew with the Pirates from Milwaukee to Chicago, but he won’t be working out at Wrigley Field this week.

Kang traveled Monday to Indianapolis, where he will continue his rehab workouts with the Pirates’ Triple-A club. Kang is on the 15-day disabled list with an injured left shoulder, and he is not eligible to return until Sunday at the earliest.

Kang has been cleared to take batting practice and field ground balls, manager Clint Hurdle said. But as Kang increases his workload of on-field activities, Hurdle said Wrigley Field’s facilities are “a tough place to ramp up anything.”

Instead, Hurdle said, Kang can work out “in a much more conducive environment to his rehab than we would have here.” Typically, injured players remain with the big league team, taking part in pregame drills with the rest of the club or on their own, until they begin an official rehab assignment in the Minors.
