Orioles recall Despaigne, Pena from Triple-A

BALTIMORE — The Orioles recalled right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne and catcher Francisco Pena from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday and placed catcher Matt Wieters on paternity leave. The O’s optioned Tyler Wilson after Friday’s 15-8 loss, so they had room to carry an additional long reliever.
Manager Buck Showalter used all three of his long relievers on Friday, leaving the bullpen short for Saturday. While managers always want to have length available out the ‘pen in case a starter is chased early, it’s especially important on Saturday given Chris Tillman is dealing with right shoulder discomfort. He was bumped back from his scheduled start on Wednesday to Saturday.
