Edwards Gives Bristol’s Low Groove High Marks

NASCAR has been staging races at Bristol Motor Speedway since 1961, yet Carl Edwards believes there’s a great unknown that awaits the Sprint Cup Series as this weekend gets rolling in “Thunder Valley.”
Recent changes to the racing surface of the Tennessee half-mile have left the track’s lower groove open for business, much more so than in recent years and much to the delight of the Joe Gibbs Racing driver.
“I don’t know if the bottom is fast because of the way they ground it or if it’s fast because of what they’ve put on it,” Edwards said Friday. “But I think it’ll be a true two-groove race and as it goes on, we’ll be watching very closely to see which lane is the preferred lane.”
In the next breath, he answered his own question.
“It will probably be the bottom,” said Edwards, who won this year’s first stop at Bristol on April 17. “But we won’t know until we get into the race what line is going to be the winning line.”
