Thumb injury caps eventful day for Donaldson

NEW YORK — Josh Donaldson is considered day to day after he was removed during the sixth inning of Wednesday’s 7-4 victory over the Yankees because of a jammed right thumb. Donaldson’s departure was unrelated to a verbal altercation that he appeared to have with manager John Gibbons earlier in the game.
Donaldson struck out in the top of the third inning, and after returning to the dugout, he slammed his bat in frustration. Gibbons then approached Donaldson and the two exchanged words, at one point going face to face during the apparent disagreement. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and backup catcher Josh Thole separated the two, and the situation never got physical.
After the game, both Donaldson and his manager had a lot of fun with the media about what their discussion was about. Regardless of the specifics, it’s pretty evident that there’s no hard feelings between the pair and that …
