Historic Olympic Games for British Gymnastics

“In what has been a truly monumental and historic Olympic Games for British Gymnastics, it is important that I take this opportunity at the end of the artistic and trampoline competitions to acknowledge the outstanding performances of all our gymnasts and the valuable contribution of their coaches, support staff and their clubs – all of whom have played a major part in this most successful gymnastics team to ever compete in an Olympic Games.

Seven medals (2 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze) is a remarkable achievement for our team which saw all three disciplines contribute to the medal haul. Max Whitlock became a dual Olympic Champion on his signature events floor and pommel and scored a bronze medal in one of the highest standard all-around events in Olympic history. Louis Smith pushed Max all the way for a piece of history for himself with his silver medal on pommel giving him four Olympic medals in three consecutive Olympic Games. Bryony Page bounced her way into the history books by winning Great Britain’s first Olympic trampoline medal and on the final day of the Artistic competition, Amy Tinkler and Nile Wilson performed their hearts out to win bronze medals on floor and high bar.

Everybody connected with British Gymnastics can take pride in this amazing achievement. Our athletes will not only inspire the next generation of Olympians but a new influx of budding gymnasts who will flock to British Gymnastics clubs and centres to get involved in our great sport. We welcome everyone regardless of age, ability or ambition for we are an inclusive sport and would love everyone to experience the joy of gymnastics. The thrill of watching our gymnasts perform live in the arena has been truly spectacular if at times nerve-wracking, but this is the beauty of the sport and we want to congratulate the organisers of Rio 2016 on staging a fantastic gymnastics event.
