Serena Williams began her quest for a second successive Olympic singles title with a comfortable victory over Aussie Daria Gavrilova.
The world No 1 and top seed needed 93 minutes to wrap up a 6-4 6-2 win in her opening match in Rio.
Despite being broken twice in the opening set, the 34-year-old took charge and secured a straight sets triumph on her third match point.
