PITTSBURGH — Coming off a disastrous road trip and needing to secure their standing as a National League Wild Card contender, the Pirates were searching for a strong start to open a homestand at PNC Park on Friday night. Rookie Jameson Taillon delivered just that, and Sean Rodriguez finished with a walk-off solo homer that sent Pittsburgh to a much-needed 3-2 win over the Reds.
Taillon allowed one run on six hits and a walk while striking out six on a season-high 102 pitches over six innings. Taillon’s fifth straight quality start was a boost for a team desperately in need of one, as the Pirates dropped five of six games during their road swing through Milwaukee and Atlanta. But it wasn’t enough for a win, as the Reds spoiled Tony Watson’s second save opportunity since being named closer. Rodriguez wouldn’t let the tie last for long, however, crushing a leadoff homer to left field in the ninth — his 11th of the season and the second walk-off blast of his career.
