Phillies’ walk-off win extends Giants’ swoon

PHILADELPHIA — The Giants’ midsummer nightmare continued Wednesday night as Maikel Franco’s bases-loaded line drive snapped a 12th-inning deadlock and gave the Philadelphia Phillies a 5-4 victory. The National League West-leading Giants fell to 4-13 since the All-Star break, the worst record in the Majors during that span.
With the score tied, 4-4, Giants right-hander George Kontos struck Tommy Joseph with a pitch to open Philadelphia’s half of the 12th. Joseph advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Phillies pitcher Luis Garcia and waited there as Kontos walked Cesar Hernandez. Jake Peavy entered the game to make his first relief appearance since moving from the starting rotation. Peavy coaxed a grounder from Aaron Altherr that third baseman Eduardo Nunez fumbled for an error. Up came Franco, who rapped a ball to center on the first pitch, though Altherr never touched second base and Hunter Pence threw the ball to Buster Posey standing at second for a run-scoring forceout.
