Opinion: Chase Clock Ticking

Several drivers are running out of time to secure a spot in this year’s Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Although he’s not officially in, Chris Buescher’s upset win at Pocono will more than likely take a spot away from another driver who was on track for the “playoffs.” Buescher still needs to move into the top 30 to be Chase-eligible, but he’s only six points short of that. Barring a disastrous final five races of the regular season, he’ll give Front Row Motorsports its first opportunity at running for a title.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s extended time away while recovering from a concussion will take out a driver expected to be in the Chase. Earnhardt was still winless when he was forced to step aside, but his position in the standings all but guaranteed him another Chase appearance.
Heading into this weekend’s visit to Watkins Glen International, the Chip Ganassi Racing duo of Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray has the final two spots in the Chase. But that doesn’t take into account the win Buescher has should he …
