Lazio will attempt an audacious move to lure Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger to Rome, per Il Corriere dello Sport (h/t Archie Vaughan Williams of Gazzetta World).
The 32-year-old has been made surplus to requirements at Old Trafford under new manager Jose Mourinho, after the Portuguese revealed a list of nine players he deemed unwanted, per Joe Bernstein of MailOnline.
Schweinsteiger has now been offered a speedy exit from Manchester, with the Italian capital club willing to offer the retired Germany international first-team football in a move not dissimilar to their 2011 coup in capturing his compatriot Miroslav Klose.
Per Jack Wilson of the Daily Star, Schweinsteiger is among the top earners at United, taking home a reported £200,000 per week.
Lazio would be unable to offer the midfielder such luxuries, and the 2014 World Cup winner will be forced to take a severe wage cut should he accept the offer of a move to Italy.
According to Il Corriere dello Sport, the Biancocelesti would only be able to offer him half of his €6 million (£5.05 million) per year contract, which could be a stumbling block in any potential move.
