Michael van Gerwen demolished Phil Taylor on Sunday night to claim the 2016 World Matchplay title to add another trophy to his already bulging cabinet.

He is showing no signs of stopping either with Taylor’s domination of darts truly being supplanted by the brilliant Dutchman, who captured the crown for a second year in a row with his 18-10 victory.

The triumph at the Winter Gardens sees Van Gerwen become only the third player – alongside Taylor and Rod Harrington – to retain the prestigious title, as he won a 12th tournament of 2016.

His list of achievements are endless, and it appears that the majors are what it’s all about for the 27-year-old where he stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Even 15-time champion Taylor described ‘Mighty Mike’ as the greatest player he’s ever played against following the Blackpool demolition job.

World Championship 2014

After losing out to Phil Taylor the previous year, the Dutchman claimed the biggest prize in darts when he became the sixth different winner of the event and, at the age of 24, the youngest.

His flair and flamboyance helped him survive a fierce comeback from Peter Wright to win his first World Darts title with a 7-4 victory.

“It’s so difficult to win this title and there was more pressure on me this year than last year. It means so much for me,” Van Gerwen said.
