Hearts crash out of Europa

Connor Salmon’s late goal was not enough to save Hearts from crashing out of the Europa League second qualifying round with a 2-1 defeat to Birkirkara.
The Maltese club went ahead on 54 minutes when Christian Bubalovic capitalised on hesitance in the box and fired home a volley.
Edward Herrera then made it 2-0 on the breakaway 13 minutes later after Sam Nicholson had hit the bar, leaving Hearts needing three goals to go through.
Salmon steered home a header on 73 minutes from Arnaud Djoum’s cross but it was too little too late, with the Scottish Premiership side paying the price for a poor 0-0 draw in Malta last week.
The warning signs were there early for Hearts. The Maltese side started with some confidence and Gorgie keeper Jack Hamilton had to parry a whipped-in cross from Vito Plut before instantly making a point-blank save from Shaun Bajada.
