Sean Smith: You can always reinvent yourself in football

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Sean Smith has been in the NFL since 2009, a second-round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins out of Utah. The Oakland Raiders are his third NFL team, his having gone from the Dolphins to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013 and then to Oakland this offseason.

So yeah, Smith has experienced his fair share of ups and downs in six years in the league, and that is part of the reason the Raiders signed him to be their No. 1 cornerback. Because while his signing strengthened the Oakland’s cornerback corps, it also weakened that of the division rival Chiefs.

So what would the veteran Smith say to a fellow cornerback who is purportedly at a career crossroads — say, former first-round pick D.J. Hayden?

“Look, I tell all the guys, regardless of who you are, myself included, the past is the past,” Smith said at the start of organized team activities. “The thing about football is you can always reinvent yourself.
