Garbine Muguruza defeats Serena Williams: Stats & Info’s recap

Fourth-seeded Garbiñe Muguruza won her first Grand Slam title Saturday, defeating the woman who has the third-most Grand Slam wins all time.

Muguruza became the second woman to defeat Serena Williams in a clay-court final. The other was Justine Henin, who did so twice and was — before Saturday — the most recent No. 4 seed to win the women’s French title (2003).
Muguruza committed a tournament-worst nine double faults in the final and hit 18 winners. She overcame that by making the most of her chances: Muguruza converted on four of 10 break opportunities, whereas Williams converted on two of eight chances to break.
And Muguruza, 22, made Williams, 34, move. Williams covered 1,161 meters, 64 meters more than Muguruza. It was the first time that Williams covered more ground than her opponent since the third round against Kristina Mladenovic.
