Pagenaud wins Belle Isle pole on big Penske day

DETROIT — Simon Pagenaud’s only poor showing of the season came at the Indianapolis 500.
He is in good position to rebound from that right away.
Pagenaud won the pole for this weekend’s first IndyCar race at Belle Isle as Team Penske swept the top three spots in qualifying Friday. Pagenaud, the series points leader, had finished first or second in every race this year before last weekend’s Indy 500, when he was 19th.
“We don’t need to have too many bad weekends,” said Pagenaud, who took his third pole of the season and fifth of his career. “I knew we were going to have bad weekends, because you can’t have a perfect weekend every day. Unfortunately it was the 500.”
Helio Castroneves was second and Juan Pablo Montoya qualified third Friday.
