Martin, Marte close to returning to Mariners

SAN DIEGO — Injured Mariners center fielder Leonys Martin took batting practice on Wednesday at Petco Park and was hitting the ball with authority as he continued working back from a strained left hamstring that has sidelined him the past week.
Martin hurt his leg while stealing second base last Wednesday and will be on the 15-day disabled list at least through June 10.
“He looked good,” manager Scott Servais said. “It’s not bothering him at all. The plan is to get him out and start jogging a little once he gets to Texas [on Friday]. They’re going to put him through some more tests today and strengthening work on the hamstring, but he feels good.”
Martin will work out with the team through its current road trip this week, then likely play a few Minor League rehab games before rejoining the club during the next homestand.
Marte rehabbing in Tacoma
Shortstop Ketel Marte — on the DL with a sprained left thumb — played his second rehab game on Wednesday with Triple-A Tacoma and went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in six innings at shortstop in the Rainiers’ 5-1 victory over Salt Lake at Cheney Stadium.
