Angels recall Marte, return Cowart to Triple-A

ANAHEIM — The Angels switched backups at third base on Tuesday, recalling Jefry Marte and optioning Kaleb Cowart to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Marte started at third base and batted fifth on Tuesday night against the Tigers, as starter Yunel Escobar had a left wrist contusion. Marte had two hits in six at-bats with the Angels earlier in May, and has hit .265/.354/.407 in 44 games at Triple-A this season.
Cowart — the Angels’ No. 5 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline — was in his second Major League stint, had one hit in six at-bats after being recalled last Wednesday.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he preferred to have Cowart get more consistent at-bats with the Bees instead of serving as Escobar’s backup in the big leagues.
