Renan Barao: ‘The goal is to fight at featherweight now and see what happens next’

Tomorrow night in Las Vegas, Renan Barao makes his return to the Octagon for the first time since a 2nd knockout loss to T.J. Dillashaw for the bantamweight title. In May 2014, Barao suffered a stunning 5th round TKO loss to Dillashaw, losing his 135 lbs title in the process. The immediate rematch was cancelled after he’d passed out trying to cut weight, and he had to take another fight before his eventual 4th round TKO defeat to Dillashaw last July.
Up next for Barao (33-3, 1 NC) is a featherweight showdown against Jeremy Stephens. It’s the 29-year-old’s first appearance at 145 inside the Octagon, and he’s been immediately given a top-10 opponent in the division. As Barao admitted in an interview with MMA Fighting, the massive weight cuts were a problem for him.
