Steven Wright gives Red Sox rotation another sweet spin

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox have become accustomed to nights like Wednesday, when they racked up 13 hits in a 10-3 rout of the Colorado Rockies. But perhaps even more reliable has been the steady hand of right-hander Steven Wright, who worked into the eighth inning for the third time in four starts en route to his fourth win of the season.

“That’s every starter’s goal, to go deep into the game,” said Wright, who allowed two earned runs in seven-plus frames while striking out seven. “It’s nice to get deep into the game, save the bullpen a little bit. That’s my goal every time. My goal is nine innings. If I don’t get nine innings I’m a little disappointed because I want to be able to go out there and pitch as many innings as I can.”

While he might have some disappointment for leaving six outs for the bullpen, Wright was able to compose himself following some difficult moments earlier in the night. Through four innings, the Rockies had three hits, drew two walks and utilized four passed balls and a pair of wild pitches to build a 2-0 lead.
