Angelique Kerber and Victoria Azarenka became the latest top-10 players on the women’s side to see their 2016 French Open runs come to an early end during Tuesday’s action. Top seed and defending champion Serena Williams managed to avoid the Round 1 upset bug, though.

Meanwhile, things were different in the men’s draw, where chalk was the name of the game. Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal all reached the second round. Murray did get pushed to five sets over the course of two days by Radek Stepanek before finally advancing.

Let’s check out the complete list of Tuesday’s results from both draws. The breakdown also includes a closer look at some of the key stories from that day’s play at the season’s second major.

Men’s Draw Recap

Murray is no stranger to drama during his matches; in fact, there are times when it seems like he thrives in those situations. So it never felt like he was on the brink of elimination, even when he fell behind by two sets against Stepanek during Monday’s portion of the match.

“He’s always been extremely difficult to play,” Murray said. “I wasn’t able to dictate many of the points, I wasn’t in a great rhythm, and that’s credit to him and the way that he played. I fought extremely hard today, and I’ll get a chance to play again tomorrow.”

The first round was a little more comfortable for fellow title contenders Djokovic and Nadal.

Djokovic made quick work of Yen-Hsun Lu. He won 74 percent of the points on his second serve, was successful on eight of his 13 net approaches and finished with a plus-13 winner-to-error ratio as his Taiwanese opponent struggled to remain competitive.

Although he advanced without much resistance, Carole Bouchard of the Yellow Ball Corner noted he didn’t look like himself in the early going:
