MLB investigates chorus incident at Padres game

Major League Baseball is investigating the controversy surrounding the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus’ appearance at a San Diego Padres game on Saturday.

The executive director of the chorus, Bob Lehman, had called for an investigation by the league and the Padres after a woman’s voice singing the “Star Spangled Banner” was played over the public address system while members of the chorus were on the field to sing the national anthem at Petco Park.

“We are pleased that Major League Baseball is going to look into this issue and we will cooperate fully,” Padres president Mike Dee said Monday, according to USA Today. “Based on our internal investigation, and our decisive actions yesterday, we are eager for all the facts surrounding this unfortunate incident to come forward.”

MLB spokesman Pat Courtney told the newspaper that the league will try to find out if there was intent on the part of any person associated with the club when the recording was played on Pride Night at Petco Park.

The Padres tweeted Sunday that the chorus has been invited back to Petco Park to sing the national anthem.

In a statement Sunday, the team said that it had terminated its relationship with the contractor responsible for the error and was going to discipline the employee in charge of game production. The Padres told USA Today Monday, however, that Matt Coy, the club’s senior director of game-day presentation, had been involved in a motorcycle accident Friday and was not at Saturday’s game.
