- Updated: May 23, 2016
Mestre, Italy, €42,500 (Outdoor Clay) :
In what will be his best season in career, Gastao Elias has won 2nd Challenger title in the last 3 tournaments that he played, as he cunquered another event in Italy. After Turin this time it was Mestre where he lifted his 6th Challenger trophy, beating Horacio Zeballos 7-6 6-2 in just under an hour and a half. It was a great opening set battle between the third and fourth seeds, with Elias wasting an initial 5-2 lead. He broke Zeballos in the second game and he saved two break points in his games to keep the lead. Serving for the set in game 9, he was broken at 15, and Zeballos was now back on the scoreboard, reaching a tie break after solid serving from both in the next 3 games. Tie break for sure didn’t reflect the fight in which the players were engaged in the opening 12 games, with Elias winning it 7-0 to take the lead! In the second set, Gastao broke first again in game 3, and he saved maybe crucial 3 break points to go 3-1 up. In the following game he took Zeballos’ serve once again and with a huge double break advantage Elias safely brought the match home few games later.Final result: [4]Gastao Elias (POR) vs [3]Horacio Zeballos (ARG) 7-6(0) 6-2 [1:28]Bangkok 3, Thailand, $50,000+H (Outdoor Hard) :After his quarter-final win against Frances …
