Manaea says focus went astray in fateful 4th

OAKLAND — Sean Manaea retired the first nine Yankees batters he faced Saturday and appeared headed toward his second straight strong start. But the A’s left-hander lost control of the fourth inning, and said following his team’s 5-1 loss that a lack of focus ultimately cost him.
“I let my mind wander and I didn’t get it back,” Manaea said. “That’s completely on me. I wasn’t executing a plan we talked about before. It’s something I need to get better at. It’s something I’ve kind of done throughout my life.”
He needed only 33 pitches through the first three innings, but allowed four runs on three hits while walking two in a 32-pitch fourth. The rookie took his second loss of the season and gave up five runs over 6 2/3 innings.
Manaea said his plan was to attack the Yankees’ lineup on the inner-half of the plate. But he walked Jacoby Ellsbury to begin the fourth — he said he opened the at-bat unable to locate his fastball on the outside …
