Mike Matheny moves Aledmys Diaz up in the lineup and it could stick

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny wrote out his 36th lineup before his team’s 41st game Thursday afternoon. In this age of analytics and platoons, this kind of lineup flexibility is far from abnormal in baseball. It has been accelerated on a Cardinals team with a lack of superstars, but good position-player depth.
Thursday’s lineup seemed significant. Matheny sounds more willing to rely on two of his youngest players in new and important roles. Aledmys Diaz, relegated to the bottom of the lineup most of this season despite ranking among the league leaders in most major categories, was batting second for the first time.
