Adam Wainwright sees Wednesday as the culmination of ‘micro-changes’

ST. LOUIS — You can run from information nowadays, but it’s pretty hard to hide from it. Adam Wainwright wasn’t all that interested in looking at his numbers this season, but they were hard to avoid. They were large and awkward and easily discovered on about 250 different websites.

He went into Wednesday’s start with the second-highest ERA (6.80) in the major leagues out of the 105 qualified starters. That’s an unfortunate but necessary place to begin this story, one the St. Louis Cardinals can now begin to hope will have a happy ending.

“It’s very hard not to know where you’re at, because in the middle of going, ‘I’m not looking at the stats, I’m not looking at the stats,’ somebody’ll text you your whole stat line,” Wainwright said.

Earlier in the day Wednesday, a hot topic on St. Louis sports radio had been whether Wainwright’s spot in the rotation was safe. It might be harsh considering Wainwright’s place in the game, but a few more bad starts and it would have been entirely valid. The Cardinals were beginning to have alternatives. Their top pitching prospect, Alex Reyes, for example, is about to finish serving his 50-game suspension for marijuana use and will make his Triple-A debut Sunday in Memphis.
