DETROIT – What a difference a few days makes.
All of a sudden, an underperforming Detroit Tigers team is swinging the bat with the type of heft proportionate to its nearly $200 million payroll.
Heading into Sunday’s game, the Tigers had lost 11 times in 12 games, putting them in perilous danger of limping home victims of another series sweep. But timely, late-game hitting — and a fortuitous check-swing call — helped the Tigers outlast the Baltimore Orioles and return home with a chance to exhale.
