In-form Guido Pella scored his 11th victory of the season (had only 11 in total before 2016) but young Russian qualifier Danil Medvedev made him run for the money, fighting hard in his 6-1 6-7 7-6 defeat. Medvedev, playing in his first ATP event in career, had another tough match yesterday in the last qualifying round (also the third set tie break) but he did well to recover after losing the first set easily but it just wasn’t enough in the end. Pella lost only 4 points on his serve in the first set and he broke his rival in 2nd and 4th games for a solid opener. The match essentially started from the second set, with much stronger resistance from the youngster. There were 16 break points in total in the first 7 games, Medvedev was 4-1 up but he couldn’t hold that advantage, as Pella broke back in game 7 to force a tie break in the end. With 6 mini breaks, the result was going back and forth and Danil stepped in at 4-2 down, taking the next 5 points to win the set and send it into a decider. We can say that Russian missed his chance to score a first ATP victory, having 8 break points in total but converting only 1 of those. He was 4-1 down after lone break point he gave to Pella but he remained positive and scored a nice comeback, to reach the deciding tie break. He had his chance in it too, leveling the score at 5-5 after being 4-1 down but Pella made the crucial mini break in the next point to …
