Firenze lords it for Griffiths

Duke Of Firenze opened his account for trainer David Griffiths with an authoritative success in the Betfred “Supports Jack Berry House” Stakes at York.

Rated in excess of 100 during previous stints with Sir Michael Stoute and Robert Cowell, the seven-year-old had made a promising start for his new connections, placing at Epsom and Lingfield this spring.

Sent off at 10-1 for a fiercely competitive opener on Dante day, running off a mark of 91, the high-class performer engaged overdrive in the last of five furlongs to get the better of 11-2 favourite Brando by three-quarters of a length.

Thesme and Red Baron finished third and fourth respectively.
