Tigers manager Brad Ausmus second-guesses pinch-hit decision

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A lot of people are second-guessing Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus these days as the team is mired in a seven-game slump.
Ausmus is not immune from that practice, either, especially after a dispiriting 5-4 loss such as the one his team suffered Monday, when the Tigers’ tailspin continued via a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth by Washington Nationals pinch-hitter Clint Robinson.
Ausmus was candid in his pregame press briefing Tuesday, admitting that he’d have played at least one critical situation differently if given the opportunity. Ausmus said he wishes he had a do-over of his decision to utilize Victor Martinez as a pinch-hitter with a base open in the eighth inning – a decision that prompted plenty of debate among disgruntled Tigers fans.
“If I had to do it all over, I’d probably let [catcher] James McCann hit,” Ausmus said.
