WTA ROME: The Possible Return of Serena Williams’ Winning Ways

A spate of withdrawals and early upsets marred the WTA action at the Madrid Open though Simona Halep did well to get past these to win the title this past Saturday against a resilient Dominika Cibulkova. While the Slovakian has opted to skip Rome, for the others, it will be yet another busy week before the French Open.
The Rome draw throws quite some interesting prospects, most prominent of which is the rejoining of Serena Williams to the Tour. Defending champion Maria Sharapova’s out after being banned provisionally for her use of Meldonium at the start of this year and subsequently failing the routine drug test during the Australian Open, but for the world no. 1, this will be an important event to try and regroup after the miserable start to her season.
