Refreshed Fowler holds slim lead at Wells Fargo

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rickie Fowler won the Wells Fargo Championship in 2012 and after a 68 on Saturday, he has positioned himself atop the leaderboard at 9 under with a great shot at getting his second win in Charlotte.
Fowler began his round three shots off the lead, but his 4-under performance matched the low round of the day (James Hahn vaulted into T3 with a 68 as well) as the course firmed up significantly on a warmer afternoon at Quail Hollow. Those conditions didn’t bother Fowler, who said after his round that he hopes they keep getting even firmer.
“[The greens] are still a little — I say soft but they’re not that soft — but you’re still making pitch marks,” said Fowler. “It’s just tough with the wind. You get down wind, down grain and you can putt it off pretty quickly. It’s a fine line, but as far as losing them, no they won’t have any chance of that. I’m looking forward to them drying out and firming up even more tomorrow. You’re going to have to be in control of your golf ball, especially out of the fairway. You’re not going to be able to play this golf course out of the rough tomorrow.”
With the way Fowler has driven the ball this week, it makes sense that he’s hoping the greens continue to firm up because that will give him an even bigger advantage. …
