Schilling: McGregor has no place at welterweight, Diaz just a ‘better fighter’

Conor McGregor took a risk and it didn’t pay off. The UFC featherweight champion, who was expected to challenge Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title at UFC 196, took on Nate Diaz in a welterweight tilt after after dos Anjos pulled out of the bout with a broken foot.
It marked new territory for McGregor. ‘The Notorious’ captured both the featherweight and lightweight titles in Cage Warriors and wanted to replicate that success in the UFC. Welterweight, however, proved to be too much too soon for Ireland’s breakout star.
McGregor was shocked to see Diaz absorb his trademark left hands and return fire with his own barrage of Stockton slaps. A 1-2 combation signalled the end for McGregor, who was reversed and submitted after desperately shooting for a takedown in the second round.
