Room to grow for top Tigers prospect Michael Fulmer

CLEVELAND — It was Michael Fulmer’s goal heading into Thursday’s start to make it a tough decision on the Detroit Tigers, and the club left the door open.
Multiple times this week, manager Brad Ausmus said he’d be thrilled if Fulmer forced the team’s hand by pitching so well they had no other choice but to keep him around. Prior to Thursday’s game, he admitted to reporters that there was “uncertainty” about the club’s rotation.

General manager Al Avila, meanwhile, told a reporter in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Thursday there was some “concern” over the performance of at least one of the Tigers’ starters.
Fulmer, a 23-year-old flamethrower, remains the franchise’s highly touted, top-ranked prospect. His fastball is big-leagues-worthy, as is his wipeout slider. But he still has room to grow, and that was evident in Thursday’s 9-4 loss to the …
