Jones: Jaylon Smith won’t start season on IR

IRVING, Texas – Speaking on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Thursday, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the club will not put second-round pick Jaylon Smith on injured reserve when the season starts, despite serious knee injury.
“We’ll take a chance he’ll be back for the playoffs,” Jones said of the linebacker.
Jones made a similar point when the Cowboys drafted Smith last Friday. Smith was asked following he was picked whether he had a chance of playing in 2016. “Absolutely,” he said. “Never doubt God.”

Smith tore the anterior and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee and also suffered nerve damage in Notre Dame’s Fiesta Bowl loss to Ohio State. Structurally the knee is sound, cleared at the medical re-check in Indianapolis, but the nerve issue scared off teams from putting Smith on their draft boards.
