Nervous Jacob deGrom notches win as son watches in Florida

ATLANTA — After appearing in his first game since April 8, New York Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom received a photo from his wife Stacey. It was their 12-day-old son Jaxon watching deGrom pitch from back home in Florida.
“She had him up for a little bit watching it,” deGrom said after earning the win in the Mets’ 3-2 victory against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday. “So it meant a lot. That last week or so, there were some ups and downs. But I think to get back out here and get back playing, it was exciting. To get that win first game back is definitely nice to have.”
DeGrom allowed one run on eight hits while striking out three in 5 2/3 innings. Manager Terry Collins removed deGrom after a two-out infield single, having resolved with pitching coach Dan Warthen before the game not to let deGrom’s pitch count exceed 85 pitches.
