Indians get reliever Goody from Yankees

CLEVELAND — The Indians added another arm to their spring bullpen competition on Tuesday, acquiring right-hander Nick Goody from the Yankees.

New York, which designated Goody for assignment on Thursday following the signing of free-agent closer Aroldis Chapman, will receive a player to be named or cash considerations for Goody, whose arrival puts the Tribe’s 40-man roster at capacity. Cleveland is required to complete the compensation element of the trade by May 5.

Goody will head to Spring Training to compete with an assortment of arms who will be vying for the two or three openings in Cleveland’s bullpen. As things currently stand, the Indians project to have relief ace Andrew Miller, closer Cody Allen, setup man Bryan Shaw and righties Dan Otero and Zach McAllister. Manager Terry Francona has utilized an eight-man bullpen often throughout his time with the Tribe.
