Joey Logano finished a career-best second in the Sprint Cup Series standings in his fourth season driving for Team Penske. Logano was looking to cap off team owner Roger Penske’s 50th anniversary in racing by winning the championship, but he came up three positions shy of accomplishing the feat in the season-ending Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. “Second place stings more than any other finishing position because you know you’re that close,” Logano said. “We had a great season. There are lots of things to be proud but success in my eyes, Roger Penske’s eyes and (crew chief) Todd Gordon’s eyes is winning and we didn’t reach that.”After winning a career-high six times in 2015, it took Logano until the June Michigan race to visit Victory Lane for the first of three times this season. “Our year went differently than last year,” Logano said. “I wouldn’t say we were as dominant speed-wise as we were. We won a couple more races last year than this year. We went through a part of the season where we didn’t have a whole bunch of speed.” Logano entered the Chase as the ninth seed and that’s when the team’s performance stepped up.
