In looking back at 2016, Kyle Busch will see a pair of third-place finishes as book ends to his year.
That’s where he wound up in the season-opening Daytona 500. And that’s where the defending Sprint Cup Series champion finished in the final Chase standings.
Sixth place in the finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway left Busch trailing champion Jimmie Johnson and runner-up Joey Logano as NASCAR closed the book on its 68th season.
“It’s very challenging to repeat as champion,” said Busch, who entered the Chase as the No. 1 seed with four regular-season wins. “You keep going and make the most of your opportunities. We did that all year but at the end, we weren’t able to execute and do a good enough job.”
That said, the 2016 season was quite satisfying for Busch and his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing team. In addition to those four wins, he had 21 other top-10 finishes in his 36 starts. Busch also won poles at Indianapolis and Phoenix International Raceway.
He opened defense of his 2015 championship with a third-place finish in February at Daytona International Speedway. That helped set the tone for JGR’s domination of the regular season as teammate Denny Hamlin won the race and Carl Edwards placed fifth. As an …
