Finland – Korisliiga Round 17: Kauhajoen Karhu beats Lapuan Korikobrat by one after a very close game

AustinHollins The most exciting game of round 17 in the Korisliiga took place in Kauhajoki. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 5th ranked Lapuan Korikobrat (7-9) to fourth ranked Kauhajoen Karhu (9-8) 90-89 in the game for the fourth place. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 26-18. But Lapuan Korikobrat won second period 28-22. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. American players dominated the game. Swingman Austin Hollins (195-91, college: Minnesota) saved the victory by scoring 32 points. Guard Tate Unruh (193-90, college: N.Colorado, agency: Inception Sports) contributed with 25 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Guard Jamal Jones (203-93, college: Texas A&M, agency: Stealth Sport) answered with 37 points (!!!) for Lapuan Korikobrat. Kauhajoen Karhu have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain fourth place with 9-8 record. Lapuan Korikobrat at the other side keeps the fifth position with nine games lost. Kauhajoen Karhu will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Lapuan Korikobrat will play on the road against BC Nokia (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals. An interesting game for Helsinki Seagulls (14-1) which hosted in Helsinki 3rd placed Joensuun Kataja (9-5). First ranked Helsinki Seagulls managed to get a 4-point victory 104-100. The former international center Gerald Lee (208-87, college: ODU) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 11 rebounds for the winners and Raymond Cowels III chipped in 22 points and 10 rebounds. Helsinki Seagulls’ coach Mikko Larkas allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American Rion Brown (198-91, college: Miami, FL) responded with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 16 rebounds. Helsinki Seagulls have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 14-1 record. Joensuun Kataja at the other side keeps the third position with five games lost. Helsinki Seagulls will again play against Joensuun Kataja (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Joensuun Kataja will have a break next round. The game between 9th ranked KTP-Basket (5-11) and fifth ranked Lapuan Korikobrat (7-9) in Kotka on Wednesday ended with biggest points difference. Guests from Lapua beat KTP-Basket 85-76. Dom Morris nailed a double-double by scoring 28 points and 14 rebounds (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) for the winning side. William Walker came up with a double-double by scoring 23 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists for KTP-Basket in the defeat. Lapuan Korikobrat maintains fifth place with 7-9 record. Loser KTP-Basket keeps the ninth position with 11 games lost. Lapuan Korikobrat will meet BC Nokia (#6) on the road in the next round. KTP-Basket will play against Kouvot and it may be a tough game between close rivals. In the last two games of round 17 BC Nokia was beaten by Salon Vilpas on the road 73-67.
