Balkan League – Round 9: Beroe is upset by Bashkimi

KejuanJohnson The game between second ranked Bulgarian Beroe (4-3) and fourth ranked Kosovan Bashkimi (4-4) was the most important one in the last round on Tuesday night. Beroe was defeated by Bashkimi in Prizren 83-66. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 11-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 83-66. Bashkimi made 19-of-25 free shots (76.0 percent) during the game. Bashkimi outrebounded Beroe 35-23 including 25 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was American guard Kejuan Johnson (193-85, college: Long Beach St., agency: Inception Sports) who scored 22 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. His fellow American import guard Eric Palm (188-87, college: McKendree) chipped in 24 points and 6 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Shane Gibson (188-90, college: Sacred Heart) who recorded 15 points and 4 assists. Beroe’s coach rotated ten players seeing no chance for a win. Bashkimi moved-up to third place in Group A. Beroe at the other side keeps the second position with three games lost. They share it with Feni Industries. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest. FYR Macedonian leader Kumanovo delivered the sixth victory. This time they beat 5th ranked Kosovan Sigal Prishtina (2-3) 86-68. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Sigal Prishtina. It was a good game for point guard Aleksandar Kostovski (186-88) who led his team to a victory with 29 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Danilo Mijatovic contributed with 18 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. American-Dominican M.J. Rhett (206-92, college: Mississippi) answered with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 15 rebounds for Sigal Prishtina. Kumanovo maintains first place in Group A with 6-2 record. Defending Kosovan champion Sigal Prishtina keeps the fifth position with three games lost. Kumanovo will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Sigal Prishtina will play on the road against Teodo Tivat (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals. The game in Gevgelija was also quite interesting. 4th placed Montenegrin Teodo Tivat (3-4) played at the court of sixth ranked FYR Macedonian Kozuv (2-5). Kozuv managed to secure a 5-point victory 81-76 on Thursday. Kenyon McNeaill stepped up and scored 31 points and 5 assists for the winners. The best for the losing side was Milan Stanojevic with 22 points. Kozuv maintains sixth place in Group A with 2-5 record. Teodo Tivat lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourth position with four games lost. Kozuv will meet higher ranked Sigal Prishtina (#5) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Teodo Tivat will play against Sigal Prishtina and it may be a tough game between close rivals. We should mention about the upset which took place in Skopje, where 9th ranked Kosovan Peja (3-2) lost to twelfth ranked FYR Macedonian Karpos Sokoli (3-5) in a road game 75-82. Kendrick Perry nailed 14 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side. Karpos Sokoli’s coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Karpos Sokoli moved-up to eleventh place in Group B, which they share with SK Tirana. Peja at the other side keeps the ninth position with two games lost. Karpos Sokoli will have a break next round. An interesting game took place in Mitrovice, where 8th ranked FYR Macedonian Feni Industries (4-3) were outleveled in a road game by eleventh ranked Kosovan Trepca (3-4) 70-45 on Monday. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Feni Industries. The best player for the winners was Besnik Azemi who scored 12 points and 8 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Trepca moved-up to tenth place in Group B. Loser Feni Industries keep the eighth position with three games lost. Trepca will have a break next round. In the last game of round 9 In Group B Sutjeska crushed SK Tirana in Niksic 79-56. Group AKozuv – Teodo Tivat 81-76The game in Gevgelija was also quite interesting. 4th placed Montenegrin Teodo Tivat (3-4) played at the court of sixth ranked FYR Macedonian Kozuv (2-5). Kozuv managed to secure a 5-point victory 81-76 on Thursday. The hosts trailed by 3 points at the halftime before their 44-36 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game.
