Nothing close for Mariners as Meetings set to end

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Jerry Dipoto doesn’t know the meaning of sitting still. He’s brainstormed for three days with his Mariners staff, talked to agents and fellow general managers, kicked some tires and studied the market.
But it appears the Mariners could head home Thursday from the Winter Meetings at Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center without making any moves, despite coming to the nation’s capital as the most active team in early offseason maneuvering and listing a veteran starting pitcher as their clear-cut remaining need.
Dipoto is scheduled to fly back to Seattle early Thursday and said his team won’t make a selection in the morning’s Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft, given his 40-man roster is full. And while he had a few discussions with other teams on Wednesday, there is “nothing substantive, nothing imminent” looming to tack on to the six trades and two free-agent signings the Mariners made in the previous month.
Sources indicated the Mariners have talked to the Giants about 28-year-old right-hander Chris Heston, but that presumably would be more a pursuit of …
