Mariners add Heston, but might leave without more

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Jerry Dipoto doesn’t know the meaning of sitting still. He’s brainstormed for three days with his Mariners staff, talked to agents and fellow general managers, kicked some tires and studied the market.
But it appears the Mariners could head home Thursday from the Winter Meetings at Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center without making any major moves, despite coming to the nation’s capital as the most active team in early offseason maneuvering and listing a veteran starting pitcher as their clear-cut remaining need.
Sources say the Mariners acquired 28-year-old right-hander Chris Heston from the Giants on Wednesday, but that presumably provides additional depth than the mid-rotation starter Dipoto desires, since Heston spent most of 2016 in Triple-A or on the disabled list.
Heston did throw a no-hitter in ’15, when he went 12-11 with a 3.95 ERA in 31 starts, but he threw just five innings for the Giants in four relief outings this past season while allowing six runs on nine hits. He was 2-9 with a 4.54 ERA in 15 games, including 14 starts for Triple-A …
